H - Halo Halo

Chowking Halo Halo

"Halo Halo" (read: ha-lò) is a very well known Filipino dessert that can also be eaten as snacks. Literally meaning, "mix," it is a mix of different fruits and other ingredients topped with crushed ice, evaporated milk and some more ingredients. You eat it by breaking the ice using the spoon and mix all ingredients before eating it.

Typically, it is served in tall glasses, but some restaurants serve it in a bowl, with the ice at the bottom and the ingredients at the top, so foodies can see what's in it. Normal choice of ingredients for this include:
  • cubed or sliced boiled saba bananas (cardava or cooking bananas)
  • cubed boiled sweet potatoes
  • grated macapuno (coconut sport)
  • boiled taro pearls
  • toasted rice crispies
  • cubed gelatin
  • sweetened kidney beans
  • boiled red mung beans
  • sweetened chick peas
  • nata de coco
  • corn kernels
  • sugar palm fruit
  • purple yam jam
  • leche flan (creme caramel)
  • ice cream (vanilla or any fruit flavored ones)
Although ingredients in your glass or bowl would vary (some have this, some don't), each serving of this food was really something nice to eat. Regular ones won't have ice cream, and the of course the special ones have either one or two scoops of ice cream.

This particular serving of Halo-Halo was bought at Chowking. My sister had this when we went to Manaoag, Pangasinan to visit the church, and since she was craving for it, we just let her have one with ice cream. I don't know why the image was dark, but I do hope you could get to see what's in a bowl of Halo-Halo. For a different look of this food, you can also click HERE.

  2. Wow .. looks as if you could eat that for a meal! As Kate says, I'd find the mix of ingredients a bit strange, but no doubt you would find some English food odd, too!

Thanks for taking part in ABC Wednesday this week! :)
