Glutamate Heaven

Glutamate Heaven

Last Wednesday, I went to my dad's hometown to give him an early visit (he was laid to rest there). I usually take morning bus rides from Manila to La Union and whenever I am on the road, I always take pictures of the view from the window, and after taking a shot of the nice view by the bridge, I accidentally hit the shutter again and out came this shot.

When I was still a kid, I loved all these sorts of advertising - the over sized versions of the food products. Before I remember there was this oh-so-big bottle of soy sauce, then there's this bottle of liquor, but this monosodium glutamate one has been present since then. Of course, there were changes, but I am now interested what made the glutamate stay over these years.

Well, so many debates and arguments about using MSG in cooking, but I guess it's just a matter of preference. I admit I sometimes use this product when I cook, but I could also say that I was brought up not using it that much. Actually, I only put in MSG in my dishes if I remember sprinkling some dash in the pot. =)

Do you use MSG?

  1. I seldom use MSG cos most instant sauces already have MSG added.

  3. No to MSG when I cook, but undoubtedly it just might be in most prepared foods.

The bigger-than-life food containers do their job well...they caught my eye right away!

  7. I try to stay away from it. It gives some people I know really bad headaches. It's in a lot of prepared food and when I don't read the label I end up using some...

  9. I don't add MSG intentionally, but I'm sure there's some that turns up in stuff I eat that I never know about.

  12. MSG is actually the fifth taste Umami...taken from the japanese word Umai which means good flavor. It's used to enhance food which is better than salt. Monosodium versus Sodium....hrrmm.

nyway, may I borrow this shot and I'll put it on my blog, www.trainshots.blogspot.com...

When I was a kid, I remember seeing the same ajinomoto (aji=flavor, moto=origin) ad in Laguna...where was this one?
